Getting a Concession Opal card

A Concession Opal card entitles you to half-price fares for travel on NSW public transport, including buses, trains, ferries and light rail. Most full-time students are eligible for a Concession Opal card but some restrictions apply.

  • Find out where you can travel using a Concession Opal card, whether you’re eligible for one, and how to apply.
  • Your Student ID card proves your entitlement to concession fares.
  • For travel within the Opal network (Sydney, Blue Mountain, Central Coast, Hunter, Illawarra and Southern Highlands), you must carry both your student ID card and your Concession Opal Card.
  • For travel outside the Opal network (including many rural and regional buses and NSW TrainLink Regional services), you must carry both your student ID card and your Transport Concession Entitlement Card.
